The traditional Ukrainian wedding ceremony can be conditionally divided into three cycles: pre-wedding. Wedd… and post-wedding, each of which breaks up into a series of scenes.
- The first stage of the Ukrainian wedding is matchmaking (Ukrainian matchmaking, zgovorini, serpent, zmovshi, zaposhy). Having decided to marry his son, the father invites two of his good friends to be the elders. Together they confer about a candidate for the bride, if the son himself does not have anyone in mind. The parents invite two more neighbors and bless their son with the icon.

- Not infrequently, the girl’s father asks to invite the groom into the house to see what he is like. If a girl gives a hand to his bow, this indicates her favor, and if she only bows and leaves, it means a refusal. If the young people agree to get married, they receive a blessing from their parents, put three bows to the ground, kiss the hands of their parents and the bread brought. The bride bandages the hand of the groom and the elders over her shoulder, puts a towel on a wooden plate, where the groom and guests should throw coins in gratitude for the gift.
The second stage of matchmaking is betrothal (Ukrainian marriage, love, hmovini, big bums), where the bride and groom invite their next of kin. The refusal of the bride after this stage was considered a gross insult, which had to be paid. At the end of the matchmaking, the young were called the groom (Ukrainian youth, young man, prince) and the bride.
At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, there was a pecheglyadini (pecheglyadini), when the next day the bride's parents with relatives brought bread to the groom's house to see the material economy of his house. In the 1920s-1930s, this element of the wedding ceremony dropped out of the general store of pre-wedding actions.
A negative sign was also the presentation of a pumpkin (harbuz) to the matchmakers, the girl’s refusal to bring a glass to the groom, and she personally returned bread to the groom’s house. In the legends, wedding songs of the Ukrainians, echoes of the custom of matchmaking. between a girl and a boy, which were also found among the southern Slavs, have been preserved
- The elders turn to the owner of the house allegorically – they ask if the fox has run into the house, and whether it is possible to look for it.
